Pop shots! with…James Peploe

I recently joined FPCUK ‘The Largest Funko Community In The UK’ (on Facebook) and found it a very friendly and welcoming group. With so many collectors out there I thought it would be the perfect place to delve in and see just what goes on in the minds of the FPCUK members. So join me today as I begin this weekly venture, starting off with…

Name James Peploe

How long have you been a collector? Since December 2016 when I was given my first Pop as a Christmas gift.

How many Pops! are in your collection?  I have 93 Pops in my collection which ranges from films, TV, sports, WWE and (mainly) superheroes and villains.

Who/what was the first Pop! you ever bought? My 1st Pop was Richard Sherman from my favorite NFL team the Seattle Seahawks and was bought by my other half Debbie. Five months later and my total is 93!

Which is your favorite Pop! in your collection? It’s a hard question as I have 2 Pops that I love equally; Ghost Rider and Bank Robber Joker. If I had to choose 1 right now I’d have to go with Ghost Rider (purely because he looks really mean) both these Pops were won on raffles too, which makes them extra sweet for me.

What is the most money you have ever spent on one Pop? The most I have ever spent on Pops is actually a deal for 2 when I got Jay and Silent Bob for £70. The most I have ever spent on a single Pop would be £50 for Tony Montana.

What do you think it is about Pops! that make them so addictive? Everyone has a favorite film and TV show or sport etc and these are the perfect collectibles to represent your favorite characters from them. They’re detailed and look good on display and are also an excellent hobby to share with others. It also helps that the Pop community is really nice too. I love sharing and showing off my collection. It just makes me want to collect more!

And finally…keep it in or take it out and play with it? I’m an inbox collector (a damaged box makes me real sad) but sometimes I get Pops that I think would look cool out of the box. So in the future,  I could be a mix between the two.

James also had a good idea for an 8th question, which is…

What is your ultimate grail Pop? Ace Ventura. He was the 1st Pop I ever saw and as I only started collecting in December he has always been expensive and hard to get hold of. It’s also one of my favorite films too.

Thank you to James for taking part, and if you’d like to too, then let me know on Twitter!

Today I have the pleasure of talking to my favorite Funko Pop Toy Hunter…@Toyhuntr! If you’re not familiar with his work, you can check him out here, (and I highly recommend you do so) but before you go hit subscribe, let’s see how his collector’s mind works.

How long have you been a collector? August 2016

How many Pops! are in your collection? Currently 84

Who/what was the first Pop! you ever bought? Hot Topic exclusive Joker from Suicide Squad

Which is your favorite Pop! in your collection? That’s such a hard question. I’d have to say at the moment it’s the Hot Topic exclusive Maleficent. It changes by the day, though.

What is the most money you have ever spent on one Pop? $22.99 for the Wonder Woman and her invisible jet pop. I make a concerted effort, not to over spend for pops. I’m always searching for deals.

What do you think it is about Pops! that make them so addictive? I think pops are so addictive ’cause of the simplistic, yet detailed look of them. Plus, I have this running theory that, at least for me, I find them so addictive ’cause of the media they’re based on. I think I grow and emotional attachment to these pops ’cause of the love I have for a certain show or comic or movie. So when I see a pop version of my favorite character from whatever medium I’m instantly hooked.

And finally…keep it in its box? or take it out and play with it? Out of the box! I love taking pictures of my pops. I feel like if I’m going through all this effort to hunt down them down and spend my hard earned money on them I want to do more than just stare at them in a box. I could walk into a store and do that.

Today’s collector is a fellow mental health advocate like myself who feels Funko Pop collecting is a wonderful way to calm and distract her from any intrusive and negative thoughts. Something I can definitely get behind. So let’s take a look at her collection, and see how she pops!

How long have you been a collector? I started collecting the fall (Autumn) of 2015.

How many Pops! are in your collection? At this moment I have, 74 Funko Pops, 30 Dorbz, and a few RockCandy, and Pint-Size heroes. I had a bigger collection but I got rid of some and started collecting other lines.

Who/what was the first Pop! you ever bought? My first pop bought for me was by my husband/ex-husband back in the fall of 2015 and it was Misty Day from FYE! I’ve since then sold her but plan on getting her back again. Though I honestly can’t remember which I bought personally first, it was all such a rush haha.

Which is your favorite Pop! in your collection? My most favorite pop is Princess Bubblegum, always and forever.

What is the most money you have ever spent on one Pop? Most money spent on a pop I believe was about $30. For $65 I had gotten The Bride from Kill Bill and Jimmie from Pulp Fiction, but I don’t have them anymore. I’ll get them back one day.

What do you think it is about Pops! that make them so addictive? For me, it’s the rush of releases and Chases, and finding ones you’ve been searching for, it’s so fun! I just love the whole Funko community too.

And finally…keep it in its box? or take it out and play with it? I was an ‘in box’ collector at the beginning, but as soon as I started my Adventure Time collection, they were all OOB. I do have quite a bit in the box but my main collections OOB are Adventure Time, Steven Universe, and the first wave of Bobs Burgers (plus a few horror pops too)

UK Indie Shop Spotlight…Figureland

There are many wonderful things in life (like getting into a freshly made bed or having your first brew of the day) but one of my loves is finding a small independent local business that specialises in toys and general geekery. We all enjoy a trip to Toys R Us or Smyths Toys, but nothing beats a local business run by somebody who genuinely cares. So I wanted to find these shops, and spread the word.

Each month I’m going to buy from a small UK shop, and grade it on certain criteria. At the end of the day, if we’re buying Funko Pops online, we want to make sure we’re getting the absolute best. Especially when it comes to price, variety & packaging.

The ‘audit’ is based on my own personal experience, and the aim is help spread the word. You should always buy locally, and if I can help more people do that, then I absolutely will.

So, who’s first up? A company by the name of Figureland so let’s see how they did.

I’m always intrigued by the collecting habits of other people. Especially when it comes to Funko Pops! There are not only literally hundreds of characters and franchises to pick from, but you also have all the variants and chase figures to hunt down too! and don’t even get me started on the whole sticker Vs non sticker, in box Vs out of box debate!

With all that in mind, I thought it would be interesting to do just that. Probe other collectors and see exactly how they work, and who better to start with than the man who gave me my addiction…

How many Pops! are in your collection? 299!

Who/what was the first Pop! you ever bought SDCC Slimer, which I picked up with my mate Eddy in Forbidden Planet (London) They had so many sick exclusives in store, if only we knew what we had in our hands at the time…

Which is your favorite Pop! in your collection? Oh boy…That I own? I’ll have to go with SDCC Beerus. Favorite Pop! would be the chase version of Eleven (from Stranger Things) If I don’t get that Pop! in my life I would honestly cry!

What is the most money you have ever spent on one Pop? I spent £65 on Gandalf (from The Hobbit) but my girlfriend spent £110 on the SDCC Ghostbusters 4 pack!

What do you think it is about Pops! that make them so addictive? Nostalgia, and the fact that they cover so many different games, series and films. They honestly cover so many bases!

Where can people find you (on social media?) On YouTube here. and Twitter  here.

And finally…keep it in its box? or take it out and play with it? Never ever take it out…never ever settle for damaged! Unless it’s a mean bobble head for the car, then maybe i’ll accept it. Or a cool ass looking keyring!

Underwater Eleven Stranger Things Pop! (Hot Topic exclusive)

Finally the drought is over! It’s been SIX long weeks since my last Pop! Purchase. Six weeks! Do you know how hard it is to go without this (silly) addiction? It’s not like I’ve been trying to wean myself off of them or anything, I’m just trying to adult better, and I think I’m finally getting it…maybe.

But when Netherworld (a small indie gaming store situated in Warrington City Centre) posted this (and Upside down Will) on their Twitter feed (@netherworlduk) I HAD to get it. Not only is Eleven one of the greatest female characters ever created (made all that much better thanks to Millie Bobby Brown) but the show itself is even more mind blowing. If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you even doing with your life? Honestly. I’m sure many people say this about Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad, but trust me, Stranger Things is something else.

So, the Pop! It sounds stupid, but that (‘helmet’?) really makes it stand out. Funko could have quite easily cheaped out and not added it, but the fact they did shows their attention to detail & love for their product. The only thing wrong with this is the fact that it’s a Hot Topic exclusive. Why is this a negative I hear you ask, well…where’s my sticker!? I know we don’t have Hot Topic here in the UK, but where is my sticker! Again, it might come across as stupid, but that ‘exclusive’ sticker (be it Target, Wallmart, Barnes and Noble or wherever else) really does add to the ‘exclusivity’ of the figure. It’s not just me who feels this way either. Plenty of collectors (mainly from the UK) get a little peeved off when an exclusive comes stickerless, but unfortunately that’s just the hand we are dealt.

Overall it’s a quality piece & I just want to shout out Netherworld Warrington once again for holding on to it for me. Very much appreciated 🤘🏻
